AURORA, Ill. - Rockford opened its 2012-13 NAC schedule against the Aurora University Spartans on Saturday afternoon. The Regents have had good success in recent seasons against the Spartans having won 5 straight in the series.
Saturday's game went back and forth for much of the afternoon. After the Regents grabbed an early 8-7 lead, the Spartans went on a 18-6 run to take an 11-point lead just over midway through the first half. However, Rockford would answer scoring eight straight points to cut the Spartan advantage to just three points. The two teams traded jabs for the remainder of the first half with Aurora taking a 34-28 lead into the half.
The second half contained a very similar feel and flow as the first half. The Spartans opened the half scoring seven of the first nine points to rebuild its lead back up to 11. The resilient Regents counterpunched right back scoring the next nine points again cutting the Spartan lead to just 2 points. However, that was as close as Rockford would get for the remainder of the day with the Spartans seizing control of the game and coasting to a 67-49 victory. The loss drops Rockford to 0-4 this season and 0-1 in NAC play.
Junior guard Sherrell Woods (Rockford, Ill./East) was the lone Regent to reach double-digits against the Spartans. Woods scored a season-high 11 points to go along with a season-best 7 rebounds and 2 steals.
