ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford College women's basketball team entered Saturday's game against the Alverno College Inferno fresh off its win Wednesday over Dominican University. The Regents held a 4-3 record against the Inferno in NAC play, but lost last season's meeting 72-69 in overtime.
The first half of action was an even of a half of play that you will ever see between two teams. The two teams each made 11 shots, had 16 rebounds and committed 7 fouls in the first half. Rockford jumped out of the gates quickly and built itself a 6 point lead less than 3 minutes into the game. Senior Nicole Lawler (Pearl City, Ill./Pearl City) was a big part of that scoring the Regents first 4 points to help her team grab a 6-0 lead. The Inferno would eventually battle back and tie the game at 14-14 with 10 minutes left in the half. Alverno then captured its biggest lead of the half, 28-22, with just over a minute remaining. The Regents closed the half strong though to knot the game at 28-28 after one half of play.
The second half of play was a much different story then the first half. Alverno controlled the entire second half of play with Rockford leading for just 20 seconds in the half. The Regents would not go down easy though; after trailing by 14 points with 8:42 left in the game, Rockford went on a quick 8-0 run over the next 90 seconds to pull back within 6 points. However, it was not meant to be as the Inferno dispelled the Regents run and coasted to a 67-52 victory.
Rockford had two players score in double-digits led by senior Nicole Lawler. Lawler had one of her best games of the season scoring a season-high 17 points to go along with a season-high 9 rebounds. The senior also had a season-best 4 steals and 1 assist. Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) was the other Regent to crack double-figures in scoring. Bjerning scored 10 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and handed out 2 assists.
Erin Ryczek (South Beloit, Ill./Hononegah) played well of the bench for the second straight game for Rockford. Ryczek scored 7 points on 2-4 shooting, snagged 4 rebounds and had 3 assists.
Rockford will return to action on Tuesday, December 4th when they travel to River Forest, Ill. to play Concordia University Chicago. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
