GREENCASTLE, Ind. - After yesterday's 66-62 victory in the opening round of the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Tournament, the Regents took to the court to face the host and #1 ranked DePauw University Tigers in the championship game. Rockford knew it was in for a difficult task as the Tigers were unbeaten entering today's game and won their opening round matchup against Rose-Hulman 79-36.
Rockford simply could not get anything going early in the first half against the Tigers. The Regents were held scoreless for nearly the first 8 minutes of the game as DePauw jumped out to a 15-0 lead. DePauw never looked back and showed why they are the number one ranked team in the country building its lead to 41-15 at the half.
After a difficult first half, the Regents played a near equal second half with the Tigers. Rockford outshot DePauw from the floor shooting 40.7% (11-27) compared to DePauw's 37.1%. The Regents also connected on 6 of 8 three-point attempts. However, the game was never in doubt as DePauw moved to 11-0 defeating the Regents 73-43.
Junior guard Erin Ryczek (South Beloit, Ill./Hononegah) was deservedly named to the All-Tournament Team for her performance this weekend. Ryczek was Rockford's leading scorer for the second straight day scoring 17 points with 3 rebounds and 2 assists. In the two games of the tournament, Ryczek scored 33 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 5 assists.
Arielle Nichols (Tampa, Fla./Land O'Lakes) scored 8 points in 19 minutes off the bench for Rockford. Nichols scored all of her points in the second half including draining a pair of three-point baskets.
The Regents will get a couple of days off before hitting the road to play the Knox College Prairie Fire on Wednesday, January 2nd. Tip-off for the game will be at 6:00 p.m.
