Football Drops Season Opener at Home

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Regents dropped their season opener to Westminster College 40-0 at Sam Greeley Field Saturday afternoon. Rain slowed down both offenses in the 1st half as Westminster led at the break 7-0. Once the rain stopped, Westminster's offense came to life in the 2nd half. The Blue Jays broke the game open early in the third quarter with touchdowns on back to back possessions. Westminster ended the 3rd quarter with a 27 yard touchdown pass from Joe Plassmeyer to Justin Grahl to make it 27-0. The Regents struggled to get their passing game going all day long and the Blue Jays capitalized on mistakes in the 4th quarter with a 91 and 38 yard interception returns for touchdowns to cap off the game. The Regents outgained the Blue Jays on the ground 77-44 but were outgained 414-164 threw the air. Rockford was also once hurt by turnovers as the Regents lost the turnover battle 4-1.

Quarterback Jacob Gorsuch (Rockford, Ill./Jefferson) led the way for Regents on offense connecting on 9 of 21 pass attempts for 84 yards. The sophomore also carried the ball 9 times for 35 yards. Sophomore tight end Dane Kirk (Rochelle, Ill./Rochelle Township) had a team-high 3 receptions for 53 yards including a long of 21 yards. Kirk Kabala (Plano, Ill./Plano) returned to the field after missing the 2011 season due to an injury and was a force on defense leading the Regents with 6 tackles including 2 tackles for loss. Derek Achan (Welsh, La./Welsh) recorded 4 tackles, including a quarterback sack.

The Regents will travel to Dubuque, Iowa to take on Loras College Saturday September 8th at 1 PM. Rockford is 0-2 against Loras all-time including a 48-17 loss last season on the road.
