ROCKFORD, Ill. - After dropping five straight, the Rockford College men's basketball team looked to get back on track as they welcomed the Dominican University Stars Tuesday night in a Northern Athletic Conference matchup. Both teams got off to a slow start as they combined for 4 turnovers and went 1-9 from the field with the lone bucket being a layup from junior forward David Dixon (Bellwood, Ill./St. Joseph) off the first possession of the game.
Dominican eventually found their groove as they drained 7 first half 3-pointers and made all five of their free throws. The Regents went 1-7 from the 3-point line while failing to make it to the free throw line. Dominican would end the half with a 9-3 run to take a 32-19 lead at the break.
Rockford came out hot to start the 2nd half when senior forward Grant Olsen (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) got fouled on a made layup and completed the 3-point play. Rockford capped off their 11-2 run with a layup from Dixon to cut the Stars lead to five with 14 minutes remaining. The Regents were able to get the Stars lead down to four with minutes remaining when junior guard Scott Suchy (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) nailed a 3-pointer from the wing. Rockford had to foul Dominican down the stretch in attempt to stay in the game but the Stars would hold off the Regents for the 65-62 victory.
David Dixon led the Regents with 18 points and 8 rebounds while junior forward Tory Minnifield (Blue Island, Ill./Esienhower) added 15 points and 5 rebounds. Suchy chipped in 13 points. The Regents will hit the road to face Concordia University Chicago January 17, tipoff is set for 7:00 PM
