ROCKFORD, Ill. - Coming off back to back overtime victories, the Regents men's basketball team was looking to make it three in a row as they hosted Concordia University Chicago in a battle for Northern Athletic Conference playoff position. Junior guard Scott Suchy (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) got off to a quick start scoring the first five points for Rockford as the Regents took a 5-2 lead.
The Regents opened up the 1st half with a 15-3 run midway through the half. Suchy started the run at the free throw line, sinking both attempts for Rockford while junior forward David Dixon (Bellwood, Ill./St. Joseph) capped off the run with thunderous one-handed dunk off a Cougar turnover giving Rockford a 29-17 lead. Rockford entered the half with a 40-34 lead. Rockford went 7-16 from the 3-point line while forcing 12 Cougar turnovers.
The Regents opened the half with a 18-7 run pushing the lead to 59-41. The Cougars stormed back to make it a eight point game with 2:26 minutes remaining in the game. Suchy would hold off the Cougars scoring 6 of the last 8 Regent points as the Regents cruised to a 78-64 victory.
The Regents made a season-high 10 3-point baskets in the victory while shooting 14-19 from the free throw line. Suchy finished with a game-high 26 points with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Junior guard Tory Minnifield (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) scored 19 points with a season-high 7 steals. Freshmen guard John O'Bryan (Richmond, Ky./Madison Central) played well off the bench again scoring 16 points with 4 rebounds in the win.
The win Makes the Regents 6-6 in the NAC and 8-13 overall. Rockford will hit the road and head to Mequon, Wis. to take on Concordia University Wisconsin February 2nd. Tip-off is set for 4:15 PM.
