ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University women's soccer team took their home field for the last time in the 2013 season this afternoon. Coming into town to face the Regents was the Concordia University Chicago Cougars, who had only two losses on the season. It was a special day for one Regent as Laura Bustos (Island Lake, Ill./Wauconda) celebrated her final home game of a four year career at Rockford. The day was made even more special as Bustos was led onto the field by her parents and her younger sister Ahissa, who is currently playing for Concordia Chicago. In all, Bustos has started 46 games so far in her Regent career and has been one of the key and consistent members of the team for the last four years.
It was a cold day at Sam Greeley field as temperatures reached the low 40's. Both teams played great defense out of the gate and the game was scoreless at halftime. Concordia Chicago scored their first goal at the 57:50 mark and followed with two more goals in the next 20 minutes. The Regents were at a disadvantage for much of the match as they played with ten players most of the first half and all of the second half, forcing them to play defense much of the game. Rockford had a chance to score first after freshman Fernanda Chavez (Belvidere, Ill./North) broke away from the pack early in the second half and lined a shot to the left side of Concordia Chicago's goal. The Cougars goalie made a diving save and the Regents could not capitalize on the insuing corner kick.
The Regents finish their season with two games on the road. They face Edgewood at 1:30 p.m. on October 20th and their final game of the season is at Aurora at 2 p.m. on October 30th.
