Second Half Cold Streak Hurts Regents

AURORA, Ill. - The Rockford University Regents women's basketball team hoped to put its recent 1-point defeat behind them on Tuesday night when the Regents hit the road to take on the Aurora University Spartans. Over the past four seasons the Regents have faired extremely well against the Spartans posting a 6-1 record in the series including erasing a 19-point second half deficit at Aurora two seasons ago. However, the Regents lone defeat came last season at Aurora and this season turned in a similar result with Rockford falling 76-65.

The Regents shot the ball extremely well in the opening half connecting on 51.9% of their shots from the field and 92.3% of their free throw attempts. Despite its excellent shooting, Rockford found itself down 8 points midway through the first half. At that point the Regents went on a 22-13 run to give themselves a 36-34 lead with just over two minutes before halftime. During that 8-minute period, Rockford made 7 of its 11 field goal attempts and connected on all 10 of its free throws. The two schools would then trade baskets for the remainder of the half as Rockford took a 41-40 lead into the intermission.

The second half did not go as well for the Regents as they went cold from the field during the final 13 minutes of the game. With Rockford still holding a 1-point lead at the 13:15 mark, the Spartans then went on a 20-2 run to put the game out of reach. Rockford would cut into the lead slightly in the final few minutes but it was not enough as the Regents fell 76-65.

Rockford finished with a pair of seniors scoring in double-digits. Lindsay Lengjak (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) finished as the team's leading scorer with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Lengjak has scored in double-figures in every game this season and has scored at least 15 points in 6 of the team's 7 games. Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) scored 10 points with 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 blocked shot.

Sherrell Woods (Rockford, Ill./East) was Rockford's leading scorer off the bench with 7 points. She also had 3 assists and 1 steal to round out her evening.

The women's basketball team returns to the court on Saturday, December 14th on the road against Wisconsin Lutheran College. The game is set to begin at 4:15 p.m.
