ROCKFORD, Ill. - Looking to secure a birth in the Northern Athletics Conference tournament, the Rockford College men's basketball team hosted the Egdewood College Eagles on senior day at the Seaver center. Junior forward David Dixon (Bellwood, Ill./St. Joseph) got the Regents started early scoring the first 4 points for Rockford as the Regents took a 4-2 lead. The 1st half was tight until Edgewood knocked down back to back 3-pointers with under a minute remaining to take a 34-28 lead at the break.
Both teams were able to force 7 turnovers in the half while the Eagles were able to outrebound Rockford 23-15. Edgewood shot 5-19 from the 3-point line with Rockford going 0-4.
Rockford came out hot the 2nd half going on a early 7-2 run bringing the game to 35-36. Rockford and Edgewood traded baskets down to the wire until Edgewood nailed a 3-pointer with the shot clock expiring giving them a 62-58 lead with 38 seconds remaining. Junior forward Tory Minnifield (Blue Island, Ill./Eisenhower) came down with two offensive rebounds and made a layup to bring the Regents within two with 5 seconds remaining. Rockford fouled instantly on the inbounds pass sending the Eagles to the line for 2 shots and a chance to seal the game. Edgewood converted on both free throws as they escaped the Seaver center with a 64-60 victory.
The Regents were led by Minnifield who finished with a team-high 14 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman John O'Bryan (Richmond, Ky./Madison Central) came off the bench to spark the Regents with 13 points including three 3-pointers. Dixon ended the game with 8 points 6 rebounds.
Despite the loss the Regents are still in contention for a NAC tournament birth and can guarantee themselves a spot with a win at Benedictine University in their season finale on February 12. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
