ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford College softball team hosted the Edgewood College Eagles on senior day at the Ernst E. Smith Athletic Fields Saturday afternoon. Rockford went into todays game looking to improve upon a 8-16 lifetime record against the Eagles.
Both pitchers started strong in game one with neither team recording a hit through the first two innings. Rockford took the lead on the first hit of the game when catcher Jessica Segalla (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) delivered a two-run two-out double giving the Regents a 2-0 after three innings. Both the Eagles and Regents added runs in the fifth inning with Segalla driving in her third run of the game giving Rockford a 3-1 after five innings.
Edgewood rallied back in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 3-3 when they scored two runs with two outs to force extra innings. The Eagles led off the eight inning with a lead-off double followed by a single before they pushed a run across with a sacrifice fly, taking a 4-3 lead. Rockford had their chance to tie when pitcher Brittany Bura (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) singled and moved to second on an infield groundout. The Eagles avoided the jam with a pop fly to end the game giving them the 4-3 victory. Rockford received a strong pitching performance from Bura who allowed 6 hits, 2 earned runs with 8 strikeouts. Segalla finished 2-3 with 3 RBI's.
Game two saw the Regents take an early lead once again when pitcher Sarah Moritz (Heyworth, Ill./Heyworth) delivered a one-out double giving Rockford a 1-0 after two innings. Moritz was in control the entire game, surrendering four hits through six innings with the Regents clinging to a 1-0 heading into the seventh inning. Edgewood strung together back-to-back hits to tie the game at 1-1 before senior Jossilyn Jones (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) came through with a walk-off triple giving the Regents the 2-1 win.
Jones finished 2-4 with an RBI. Moritz went 1-3 with an RBI at the plate surrendering 5 hits over seven innings, giving up 1 earned run with 3 strikeouts.
Rockford will take to the road to face Lakeland College April 29 in Sheboygan Wis. First pitch is set for 3 P.M.
