ROCKFORD, Ill.- Looking to shake off a couple of early season conference losses, the Rockford University men's basketball team hosted the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors Saturday afternoon. It was a tough game that was decided by a poor stretch by the Regents in the second half.
After a back-and-forth start to the game, the Regents went out to a 13-11 lead seven minutes into the half after baskets by Kenny Parks (Mascoutah, Ill.) and Brandon Tyson (Joliet, Ill.). A few minutes later, Rockford was able to push its lead to six points after a layup by Zach Wallace(Rockford, Il.). Wisconsin Lutheran then battled back and with eight minutes left held a 20-17 lead. A jump shot by John O'Bryan (Richmond, Ky.) and a layup by Wallace regained the lead for Rockford at 21-20. It was the last time the Regents held a lead in the first half. The Warriors were able to go ahead by seven with five seconds left in the half. Ross Arteaga (Mendota, Ill.) made two free throws at the end of the half to put the score in favor of Wisconsin Lutheran 36-31.
Rockford slowly ate away at Wisconsin Lutheran's lead in the early part of the second half. A layup by Wallace, a jump shot by Trae Blumhorst (Mendota, Ill.), and two free throws by O'Bryan put the Regents up 46-45 with 14:13 left in the game. But the Warriors quickly regained the lead on a three-pointer. Over the next five minutes, the teams would go back-and-forth, with neither team having a lead greater than five points.
The Regents were down 57-53 at the 9:25 mark when a crushing slide began. Over the next six minutes, the Warriors increased their lead to 20 points and put the score at 83-63. Two three-pointers by Arteaga, one by O'Bryan, and a layup by Wallace down the stretch gave Rockford some life, but it was not enough as the Regents fell 91-74 to Wisconsin Lutheran.
Four Regents scored in double-digit points. O'Bryan led the way with 20 points. He made three three-pointers and all seven of his free throw shots. He also had two rebounds, two steals, a block, and four assists. Right behind O'Bryan was Arteaga with 17 points. He made four three-pointers and finished with five assists.
Wallace finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Blumhorst rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points. He also had six rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Wallace and Blumhorst combined to make 11-of-14 shots and 4-of-5 free throws. Tyson had seven points and six rebounds of the bench.
Rockford's next game is on December 17 at Illinois Tech with a start time of 7:00 pm. The Regents do not return home until New Years Eve against Concordia Chicago at 2:00 pm.
