FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The women's basketball team fell 84-66 on the road to the first place Marian University Sabres on Saturday. The loss drops the Regents to 1-2 in the NACC while the Sabres (6-0, 3-0 NACC) remain unbeaten.
Two of the biggest deciding factors in the game were turnovers and points off turnovers. Rockford committed 10 more turnovers than Marian and the Sabres outscored the Regents 36-13 in points off turnovers.
Rockford got off to a very impressive start in the opening minutes of the game but was unable to continue that momentum throughout the afternoon. The Regents jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead off of 4 points from Mallorie Getzelman (Bryon, Ill.) and 3 points each from Callie Rezin (Rockford, Ill.) and Casey Pettit (Rockford, Ill.). The lead remained 10 at the 15:52 mark when the Regents went cold from the floor and the Sabres took control of the game. Over the next 10 plus minutes, Rockford made just one basket on 1-for-6 shooting and committed 13 turnovers as the Sabres went on a 28-2 run taking a 32-16 lead.
The Regents were briefly able to cut the deficit down to single digits early in the second half when Callie Rezin made a layup to cap off a 6-0 run and pull Rockford back within 8 points. However the Sabres quickly squashed any momentum with a 9-2 run of their own pushing the lead back to 15 points en route an 84-66 win.
Mallorie Getzelman led the Regents in scoring for the first time this season. Gezelman poured in a season-high 17 points. She also added 7 rebounds and 2 assists.
Senior Katie Clark (Rock City, Ill.) had her second straight impressive performance of the season. Clark tallied her first double-double of the year with 13 points and 13 rebounds off the bench for Rockford.
Junior Amanda Davis (Mundelein, Ill.) turned in her best shooting effort of the year. Davis scored 12 points on an impressive 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed 4 rebounds.
The women's basketball team returns to the court on Tuesday, December 9 at Aurora University. The Spartans and Regents will tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
