LILSE, Ill. – The men's basketball team entered Wednesday's game with its playoff hopes still alive. The Regents needed to win at Benedictine University and have both Wisconsin Lutheran and Lakeland lose their respective games. However, the Eagles were in control the entire game knocking the Regents out of playoff contention by a final score of 86-62.
The first half got off to a slow start as both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net before the Eagles caught fire. After falling behind 9-3, Scott Suchy (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) connected on back-to-back layups to pull his team back within 2 points. The Eagles and Regents then traded baskets over the next few minutes before Benedictine went on a 9-0 run to grab a 24-12 lead. Benedictine continued to build on that lead for the remainder of the opening half and took a 48-21 lead into the intermission.
Rockford played much better in the second half, but it was not enough to dig themselves out of the deep first half hole. The Regents outscored the Eagles 41-38 in the final period; however, ultimately fell by an 86-62 final.
Sophomore John O'Bryan (Richmond, Ky./Madison Central) and senior David Dixon (Bellwood, Ill./St. Joseph) were the lone Regents to crack double-figures. O'Bryan finished with a team-high 13 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Dixon scored 12 points with 5 rebounds and 1 blocked shot.
Scott Suchy finished his collegiate career with 9-point, 5-assist, 4-rebound performance. Phil Andrade (South Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom Trail) scored 8 points, got 8 rebounds and had 2 assists in his final collegiate game.
Freshman Zach Wallace (Rockford, Ill./Belvidere) scored 6 points, had 7 rebounds and blocked 3 shots.
The men's basketball team finishes the season with a 10-15 overall record including going R6-14 in NACC play.
