WINTER HAVEN, FLA.- Game two of the double-header against Coe College was a different kind of game than the first two for the Rockford University Regents. Rockford's bats came up big and its pitching shut down the Kohawks as Rockford cruised to an easy 8-1 victory.
Rockford got on the board first in the fourth inning thanks to a little two-out luck. Bryan Grabowski (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) lead off the inning with a single and one batter later Brian Wiest (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) also singled. A groundout moved the runners up to second and third with two outs. Jacob Gorsuch (Cherry Valley, Ill./Jefferson) followed that up by hitting a grounder in the shortstop hole which the third baseman dove for. It hit off his glove and rolled into left field resulting in both Grabowski and Wiest scoring.
The Regents got things going two innings later with Wiest again helping to start the rally with a lead-off walk. After a fielder's choice moved Wiest up a base Gorsuch came up and again delivered, this time with a RBI double to left field. Matt Szytz (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) reached first on a bunt single and Jake McKnight (Monroe Center, Ill./Stillman Valley) followed that up with another Regents RBI double. After a ground out Matt Grimes (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) came up and promptly hit a three-run home run to deep left center field. Rockford would add on one more run in the ninth after a pinch-hit double by Kyle Burger (Planfield, Ill./North) and a RBI double by Wiest.
On the mound to start the game for Rockford was Michael Kiviranta (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates). He had his stuff working all game, throwing six shut-out innings to start off the game. He got into a little trouble in the 7th inning giving up three singles and a run but got out of it with an inning ending double-play. James Northrup (Rockford, Ill./Winnebago) came into the game in the 8th and threw two shut-out innings, allowing one base runner and striking out four batters.
