ROCKFORD, Ill. - On Thursday afternoon, the Regents softball team hosted the red hot Dominican University Stars (21-9, 12-2 NACC) who entered today winners in 10 of their last 12 games including six straight. Rockford was never quite able to break though in either game dropping both by finals of 9-0 and 7-2.
The opener did not go well for Rockford as the Regents were unable to get anything going. Stefaney Kenworthy (Veedersburg, Ind./Fountain Central) recorded the Regents only hit of the game when she led off the fourth inning with a single into left field. Rockford's best scoring opportunity came one inning later when it had runners on second and third with two outs. However, Dominican ended the threat making a nice catch on a line drive at third base to secure the 9-0 win.
Game two had a very similar feel to it as the Stars scored the first five runs of the game before the Regents finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brittany Bura (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) and Jessica Bjerning (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) began the inning by stringing together back-to-back hits to place runners on first and second with no outs. After a fielder's choice and a hit batsman, Megan Dougherty (Ottawa, Ill./Marquette) delivered the big hit of the day lacing a 2-run single into center field making it a 5-2 Dominican lead after five innings. The Stars sealed the sweep in the top of the seventh when they added a pair of runs for the 7-2 win.
The Rockford University softball team returns to the diamond at home on Saturday, April 19th against Lakeland College. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12:00 p.m.
