Regents Fall Short in Final Game of Season

MEQUON, Wis. - Day two of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Baseball Tournament began with Rockford squaring off against the Benedictine University Eagles. The Regents knew it would be a tall task to knock off the Eagles as Rockford has not defeated Benedictine since the 2010 season. However, for the vast majority of the game it appeared as though Rockford would break though and pick up the win, but a late Eagle rally ended Rockford's season as Benedictine advanced in the tournament with an 11-6 win.

Rockford used a big four-run first inning to grab an early lead. Sophomore Cole Logemann (Lena, Ill./Lena-Winslow) continued his hot hitting when he led off the game with a hit for the second straight day. Two batters later, Chris Senn (Victorville, Calif./Silverado) drove in Logemann with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. Terry Wiltshire (Elizabeth, Ill./River Ridge) then gave Rockford its first lead of the tournament driving in Senn with an RBI single of his own. The Regents caped off the inning when senior Matt Grimes (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) blasted a two-run home run to straight away center field putting Rockford up 4-1 after one inning.

Over the next six innings the Regents were able to get numerous runners on base but could only scratch across one run. Following a walk to leadoff the sixth inning, Cole Logemann extended Rockford's lead to 5-1 with an RBI single to center field. Unfortunately the Regents were unable to add any more runs in the middle innings and consequently left 11 runners on base.

On the mound it was senior pitcher Kaleb Rich (Washington, Iowa/Washington) who appeared to be on his way to his second straight win in an elimination game. After surrendering a run in the first inning, the senior was nearly unhittable over the next 6 innings. At one point Rich retired 14 consecutive hitters before running into some trouble in the 8th inning. At that point Benedictine took control of the game and scored 10 runs over the final two innings en route to a 11-6 win.

The Regents last run of the game came in the ninth inning off the bat of senior Adrian Gameros (Rialto, Calif./Carter). In the final at bat of his collegiate career, Gameros blasted a solo home run over the left field wall.

With the loss Rockford is eliminated from the NACC Tournament and finished the season with a 20-19 record.
