ROCKFORD, Ill.- Returning home for its first home game in ten days, the Rockford University women's soccer team faced the Faith Baptist Bible College Eagles. A win had thus far eluded the Regents but the team had played tough in a lot of their games. The Regents perseverance paid off in Friday afternoon's game against the Eagles. Two first half goals and great team defense resulted in a 2-0 shutout win for Rockford. It was Rockford's first shutout since beating Mount Mary 8-0 last season.
For the season Rockford's offense has struggled at times but that was not the case today. Rockford put consistent pressure on Faith Baptist from the beginning of the game. The Regents would finish with 22 team shots with 15 of those shots coming on goal. On the flip side the Regents defense played its best game of the year. They held the Eagles to six shots with only three on goal. In recording her first college career shutout, freshman goalie Avery Jones (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) made a couple of nice plays on the few shots that Rockford's defense did allow, including two saves with less than two minutes left in the game to preserve the shutout.
It was no surprise when Chrissy Hermann (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) scored an unassisted goal 4:57 minutes into the game to put the Regents up 1-0. It was Hermann's second goal of the season. About a half hour later Allyson Fillmore (Marengo, Ill./Marengo) scored her first goal of the season off of a corner kick by senior Danika Mollway (Rockford, Ill./Harlem). It was Mollway's first assist of the season. Forwards Callie Davis (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood West) and Fernanda Chavez (Belvidere, Ill./North) made the Eagles goalie work all game as they finished with seven and four shots respectively.
Rockford returns to the field September 27th when they travel to Knox for a 1:30 p.m. game. The Regents next home game is on October 12th at 11:00 a.m. against Grinnell.
