MT. PLEASANT, Iowa - The Regents women's soccer team played its best game so far this season on the road at Iowa Wesleyan College. Rockford scored its first two goals of the season and had a late lead in the second half before eventually finishing in a 2-2 tie following two overtime periods.
Rockford played an excellent opening half as the Regents took their first lead so far this season. Following an early goal by the Tigers, the Regents answered back with a pair of goals in just over a two minute span. Freshman Emma Reidner (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) got the scoring started for Rockford in the 39th minute when she notched her first collegiate goal and tied the match at 1-1. The Regents offense wasn't done as Rockford took the lead in the 41st minute after Chrissy Hermann (Tinley Park, Ill./Tinley Park) found the back of the net to give the Regents a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
The second half was controlled by the defenses as neither team was able to score until the closing seconds of regulation. With just 5 seconds remaining and Rockford holding a 2-1 lead, Iowa Wesleyan was able to tie the game and force overtime.
The Regents and Tigers battled back-and-forth in each of the two 10-minute overtime periods. Rockford was able to muster 6 shots compared to just 2 for Iowa Wesleyan, but neither team was able to score in either overtime as the Regents and Tigers finished in a 2-2 tie.
Rockford outshot Iowa Wesleyan 28-8 in regulation and overtime. Freshman Callie Davis (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood West) led the Regents with a match-high 9 shots while junior Chrissy Hermann and Alexandra Fisher (Rockford, Ill./Jefferson) each took 5 shots.
Goalkeeper Avery Jones (Tappahannock, Va./Essex) played well in her first collegiate road match. Jones surrendered just 2 goals in 110 minutes while making 4 saves.
The women's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday, September 9th at home against Beloit College. The match has a scheduled start time of 4:00 p.m. at Sam Greeley Field.
