Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Slow Starts Continue to Haunt Regents

MEQUON, Wis. - Fresh off its win against Beloit College on Tuesday, the Regents women's basketball team was looking to string together a pair of victories for the first time this season at it traveled north to take on the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons. Rockford played Concordia Wisconsin tough the entire day as the game finished in a near statistical dead heat. However, the one area where Concordia Wisconsin had an edge was in field goal shooting which turned out to be the difference in the game. The Falcons shot 45.8% from the field compared to just 38.5% for the Regents giving CUW seven additional made baskets and a 65-56 Falcon win.

Rockford once again stumbled out of the gates falling behind 11-2 just under 6 minutes into the game. However as they have done all year, the Regents continued to fight and eventually got back into the game. Over the next 5 minutes, Rockford went on an 11-4 run to pull back within two points. Juniors Diamond Williams (Carpentersville, Ill.) and Amanda Davis (Mundelein, Ill.) spearheaded the Rockford run scoring nine of the eleven points. Following a timeout, Concordia Wisconsin answered back and pushed its lead back up to eight points. Once again the Regents fought all the way back to get within three points in the closing seconds of the half when senior Callie Rezin (Rockford, Ill.) drained a three-pointer to even the game at 27-27 entering halftime.

The second half got off to a much better start as Mallorie Getzelman (Byron, Ill.) knocked down a three-pointer to open the half for the Regents and give them their first lead of the day, 30-29. The Regents and Falcons then traded baskets for much of the second half as there were multiple ties and lead changes. However, the Falcons would eventually seize control of the game as they connected on a three-pointer with 2:28 remaining to push their lead back up to 9 points. Rockford would cut the deficit to six on a couple different occasions but could not get any closer as the Falcons won by a 65-56 final.

Diamond Williams again led the Regents in scoring as she hit double-digits for the seventh time this season with 14 points. She rounded out her stat line with 6 rebounds and 1 assist.

Callie Rezin played very well off the bench for Rockford. Rezin scored 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting and added 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal.

Tajanae Key (Glendale Heights, Ill.) had a good all around game of the bench with 4 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.

The women's basketball team returns to the court on Tuesday, January 6 at Lakeland College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
