ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University softball team was finally able to get in its first home series of the season. After a couple of postponements, the Benedictine University Eagles traveled to Rockford Tuesday afternoon for a conference doubleheader. One rough inning in each game for Rockford decided the Regents fate. Benedictine took game one 10-0 and game two 16-2. The lone offensive bright spot for Rockford was in game two when Brittany Bura (Chicago, Ill.) hit a two-run home run. She also had a single in the first game.
Game one was tight until the final inning. Benedictine scored an unearned run in the top of the second inning off of Regent starter Sarah Rizzo (Monee, Ill.). Rizzo pitched the whole game for the second complete game of her career. The Eagles held Rockford's offense down and then strung together a bunch of hits to score nine runs in the top of the fifth. Rockford could not score in the bottom half of the inning to extend the game.
In game two, Benedictine scored four quick runs in the first inning. Bura answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run blast to left center field. She scored Mercedes Boykin (Belvidere, Ill.), who singled one batter before Bura's blast. Lynn Blakeley-Snyder (Winnebago, Ill.) tripled after Bura, but was left stranded on third. The Eagles exploded for another nine run inning in the top of the fourth to seal the victory. The Regents offense could not push across anymore runs after the first inning.
Rockford plays next on Thursday April 2 at 3:00 p.m. at Mount Mary. The Regents will play two games.
