CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Following its impressive win earlier in the morning, the Rockford University softball team looked to keep its unblemished record intact as it took on Swarthmore College. Early on it appeared as though Rockford would remain unbeaten as it once again jumped out to an early lead.
Alexandra Storey (Dexter, Mich.) got the Rockford offense started with a one-out single in the bottom of the first inning. Stefaney Kenworthy (Veedersburg, Ind.) then followed with a walk to give the Regents their first scoring threat of the game. Two batter later, Sarah Rizzo (Monee, Ill.) drove a ball into the outfield that was dropped allowing both runners to score and gave the Regents an early 2-0 advantage.
After Swarthmore answered with a run of its own in the top of the second, Rockford added two more runs in the bottom half to go up 4-1. Sophomore Ali Moore (Mascoutah, Ill.) led off the inning with single and then advanced to third base on a pair of wild pitches. Maranda Walker (Rockford, Ill.) then drove in Moore with a sacrifice fly. Two batters later, Lisa Blakeley-Snyder (Winnebago, Ill.) crushed a solo home run over the outfield wall extending the Regent lead to three.
The third inning followed the exact same pattern as Swarthmore scored one in the top half and Rockford answered with two runs in the bottom half. With two outs and two runners on base, Ali Moore laced a double just inside the right field line scoring both runners and giving the Regents a 6-2 lead, their largest of the game.
However, from that moment forward, things began to go south for the Regents. Swarthmore took advantage of a costly Rockford error and scored 5 unearned runs in the top of fourth to take a 7-6 lead. The Regents were able to tie the game in the bottom of the inning scoring a run on a brilliantly executed first and third play. The game would remain tied until the sixth inning when Swarthmore again took advantage of two Rockford errors, scoring three runs, two of which were unearned en route to a 10-7 win over the Regents.
Alexandra Storey and Ali Moore each recorded multi-hit performances for the Regents. Storey went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Moore was 2-for-3 with a double, 2 runs batted in and a run scored.
The Rockford University softball team returns to the diamond on Monday, March 9 at 9 AM EST against Olivet and at 11 AM EST against Kenyon.
