ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University softball team hosted the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons Monday afternoon. It would be a tough match up for Rockford. The Falcons, 15-7 overall, came in tied for first in conference with a 6-0 record. Sarah Moritz (Heyworth, Ill.) got the start in game one and kept the game close. But offense was a problem in game one and also in game two, where a big late inning blew open the game for Concordia Wisconsin.
Concordia Wisconsin started fast in the game one. The Falcons scored a run in the first inning and two more in the second inning to find themselves up 3-0 after two innings. Only one of the three runs against Moritz was earned.
The Falcons starting pitcher shut down the Regents offense and held the team to two hits and a walk. Brittany Bura (Chicago, Ill.) and Lisa Blakeley-Snyder (Rockford, Ill.) each recorded a hit and Moritz recorded a walk in her three plate appearances. Moritz allowed another run in the top of the sixth and the Regents fell 4-0 to the Falcons in game one.
Game two was much of the same for Rockford. Bura started on the mound and kept the game close until the last couple of innings. But Rockford's offense struggled again, and despite being down just 3-0 through five innings, Rockford could not create any momentum to mount a rally. Concordia Wisconsin put the game out of reach after scoring five runs in the sixth inning. Bura scored Rockford's first run of the day in the bottom of the sixth. She reached base via an error and hustled around to score on a Maranda Walker (Rockford, Ill.) double.
The Regents season continues on Wednesday April 8 with a doubleheader at Edgewood. The first game starts at 2:00 p.m.
