ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday with an impressive 2-0 victory over the Eureka College Red Devils. The Regents dominated nearly every aspect of the match from start to finish. Rockford outshot Eureka 22-5 including a 16-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The Regents scored a goal in each half both coming off the foot of sophomore Giovana Ortega (Rockford, Ill.). Ortega gave Rockford an early 1-0 advantage in the 8th minute when she found the back of the net from about 5 yards out. The Regents maintained their one-goal lead until the 65 minute mark when Ortega drilled a penalty kick past the goalkeeper to make it a 2-0 Rockford advantage. The two goals were more than enough for the Rockford defense as it pitched its first shutout of the year.
Junior goalkeeper Gris Mendoza (Rockford, Ill.) recorded her first shutout as a Regent. Mendoza played the entire 90 minutes and tallied a pair of saves.
The RU women's soccer team returns to the field on Monday, September 14 at home against Greenville College. The match has a scheduled start time of 3 p.m. at Sam Greeley Field.
