MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Rockford University volleyball team evened its record on Tuesday night with an impressive 3-1 win (25-12, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16) on the road against the Mount Mary University Blue Angels.
The first set of the match was very tight early on as the Regents and Blue Angels each led in the opening moments. However, with the set tied at 9-9 Rockford began to seize control winning the next 9 points to take a commanding 18-9 lead. Shortly after the Regents put the set away scoring 7 of the next 11 points to grab a quick 1-0 advantage.
The Blue Angels would not go into the night quietly as they battled back to win the second set before Rockford regained control of the match winning both the third and fourth sets. In the third set, it was a 11-0 run midway through that allowed Rockford to put the Blue Angels away and regain the lead. The fourth set saw a similar type of a run as the Regents scored 8 straight points to pull back in front and take control of the set. The ladies then scored 10 of the last 17 points to win the set and the match.
Senior Kayla Van Buren (Franklin Grove, Ill.) picked up right where she left off over the weekend. Van Buren recorded a match-high 13 kills on 25 attempts for an impressive .360 kill percentage. She also added 2 service aces and 2 block assists.
Junior Taylor Rossi (Ingleside, Ill.) tallied her third straight double-double of the season. Rossi had a match-high 22 assists and 10 digs along with 5 aces and 2 block assists.
Madison Lanquist (Rockford, Ill.) also played well for the Regents. Lanquist led Rockford with 12 digs while serving up 2 aces and recording 3 assists.
The RU volleyball team returns to the court on Friday, September 11 at the Finlandia University Tournament. The Regents are set to play UW-Superior at 3 PM and Northland College at 6 PM.
