ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University men's basketball team returned to action Wednesday looking to end their two-game losing streak against Concordia University Chicago at the Seaver Center. The Regents were attempting to notch their seventh Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victory and their tenth win of the season. Rockford jumped out to the early lead and never surrendered it, ultimately winning by the final 103-88.
The Regents quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead forcing the Cougars to take an early timeout. The game continued on with each team trading baskets until Rockford went on a 9-0 run, with Zach Wallace (Rockford, Ill.) scoring six of the nine, to push the lead to 12 points with just under ten minutes remaining in the first half. From that point Rockford controlled the rest of the half leading 50-41 at the half. Michael Murray (Princeton, Ill.) carried the Regents for most of the half with 19 points and 10 rebounds. He recorded his tenth double-double of the season with the first-half performance. In the second half Rockford coasted to their seventh conference victory, expanding the lead to 17 multiple times ultimately winning by the final 103-88.
Throughout the game the Regents exploited the lack of size of Concordia and finished with 52 points in the paint for the game. With the success in the lane, the Regents also made six three-point shots in the game. Rockford got to the line 45 times compared to 24 of Concordia resulting in 33 made for the Regents and 14 for the Cougars. The Cougars were held to only 36.1% from the floor on the night compared to the Regents' 44.4%.
Leading Rockford offensively was Murray scoring a game-high 28 points with 14 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 assists. Wallace added 18 points, 12 rebounds, 5 blocks and 2 steals for his third double-double on the season. John O'Bryan (Richmond, Ky.) collected his second double-double of the season with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Tony Diemer (Rockford, Ill.) rounded out the Regents in double-figures with 19 points and 6 rebounds.
The Rockford University men's basketball team returns to action Saturday, January 23 to take on Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon, Wis. with a scheduled start time of 2 p.m.
