ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University men's basketball team returned to action Saturday, January 9 to take on Edgewood College at the Seaver Center in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. The Regents took a large lead into halftime and ultimately coasted to an 89-71 victory.
Rockford jumped out to an early lead and never allowed Edgewood to tie the game up, leading from start to finish. With 13:22 remaining in the first half Zach Wallace (Rockford, Ill.) made a two-point jump shot sparking a 10-2 run for the Regents. In the remaining 11 minutes Rockford outscored Edgewood 30-27 to take a 50-36 lead into halftime. Michael Murray (Princeton, Ill.) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in the first half. John O'Bryan (Richmond, Ky.) and Tony Diemer (Rockford, Ill.) scored 14 points and 13 points respectively to finish the half. Rockford shot a blistering 48.8% from the floor and 80% from the free-throw line in the first half. The Regents continued to flex their muscles in the second half and coasted to an 89-71 victory. Rockford used stifling defense to force Edgewood to only 28.6% shooting on the game.
O'Bryan was terrific for Rockford on both sides of the ball, leading the team with 27 points, 11 rebounds and 3 steals. The double-double was his first on the season. Murray had another spectacular game scoring 25 points with 19 rebounds, 4 assists, and a team-high 4 blocks. He continues to show how impressive of a season he is having, with his ninth double-double on the season, which leads the NACC. Diemer posted a career-high 23 points on 11 of 15 shooting. He also collected 4 rebounds and a team-high 3 steals. Ross Arteaga (Mendota, Ill.) did not have a good shooting night, but tallied 11 rebounds and a team-high 8 assists with 0 turnovers.
The Rockford University men's basketball team will return to action Tuesday, January 12 to take on Aurora University at the Seaver Center with a scheduled start time of 7 p.m.
