ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University women's basketball team returned to action tonight to take on Beloit College. The Regents were looking to continue their strong start to the season and notch another victory. Unfortunately, Rockford was unable to secure a victory falling by the final of 74-64.
The Regents and Buccaneers were locked in a battle as both teams traded leads six times in the opening quarter. Ultimately, Rockford led at the end of the period 17-16. Leading the Regents for the period was Nicole Silvers (Byron, Ill.) with 6 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field.
In the second quarter, Beloit jumped out to their largest lead of the half at 28-20 with five minutes remaining in the quarter. The Regents fought back into the game narrow the deficit to two points, 34-32 at halftime. Leading Rockford at the half was Mallorie Getzelman (Byron, Ill.) with 11 points and 4 rebounds. The Regents shot 45.5% from the field and 85.7% from the free-throw line.
In the final two quarters Rockford initially took a lead to begin the half. However, they could not keep up their hot shooting and committed some turnovers leading to as much as a 15-point deficit. The large deficit became too much to overcome as Rockford could only narrow the margin to eight points twice. Ultimately, the Regents fell by the final of 74-64. For the game, Rockford shot 41.2% from the floor and 75.0% from the free-throw line.
Leading Rockford for the night were Casey Pettit (Rockford, Ill.) a game-high 18 points. Pettit also had a nice all-around game collecting 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 rebounds. Mallorie Getzelman added 16 points and 8 rebounds. She also grabbed a game-high 6 steals. Taylor May (East Moline, Ill.) tallied 12 points off of the bench in 14 minutes. Nicole Silvers added 10 points and 2 steals.
The Rockford University women's basketball team returns to action Saturday, December 3 to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, Wis. with a scheduled start time of 2 p.m.
