ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University women's basketball team returned to action today to take on Marian University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. The Regents were looking to secure their first NACC victory on the young season. Rockford outplayed Marian for most of the game en route to the 85-71 victory to earn their first NACC victory of the season.
Marian jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead as Rockford had a sluggish start. The Regents caught fire and went on a 14-3 run to take their largest lead of the quarter, 17-13. The run was led by Mallorie Getzelman (Byron, Ill.) and Taylor May (East Moline, Ill.) with a combined 13 points. Ultimately, Rockford had a 17-15 lead heading into the second quarter. Getzelman led all scorers with seven points.
To begin the second quarter, both teams traded baskets for almost the entire second quarter. Rockford used a mini 6-2 run to give them their largest lead of the quarter. The Regents largest lead came when May dropped in a layup with under one minute remaining. The layup extended the lead to ten points, 39-29. Going into half the Sabres, scored three unanswered to narrow the lead to 39-32 at halftime. May led all scorers with 15 points in the first half.
Rockford jumped out of the gates in the third quarter with a 13-4 run to extend their lead to 18 points, 54-36, with just under 5:30 remaining in the quarter. After the Regents increased their lead to 19 points, the Sabres narrowed the margin down to 13 points, 58-45, with 2:25 remaining in the quarter. Rockford extended their lead at the end of the third quarter 66-50. In the fourth quarter the Regents again took it to the Sabres and continued to increase their lead. Rockford's lead got as large as 25 points, 80-55, before Marian began to chip away at the lead. Ultimately, the Regents won handily by the final of 85-71.
Leading Rockford for the game were Mallorie Getzelman who tied for a game-high 25 points with 6 assists and 5 rebounds. She is now averaging a team-high 25 points per game. Taylor May posted her career-high in points and also tied for a team-high of 25 points with 5 rebounds. Tajanae Key (Glendale Heights, Ill.) had a strong all-around game scoring 12 points with 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Nicole Silvers (Byron, Ill.) rounded out the Regents scorers in double-figures with 11 points.
The Rockford University women's basketball team returns to action Tuesday, December 13 to take on Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown, Wis. with a scheduled start time of 5 p.m.
