MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The RU women's basketball team hit the road on Wednesday as the Regents traveled North to square off against the Alverno College Inferno. The Regents entered the game looking for their first NACC win of the season, but unfortunately came up short by a final score of 70-56. Rockford played fairly well in three of the four quarters but was ultimately hurt by a sluggish first quarter where the Regents were outscored 26-12 and never fully recovered.
The opening period got off to rough start as Rockford quickly found themselves down double-digits. The Inferno began the game on a 13-2 run less than three minutes into the first quarter forcing the Regents to play catch-up for the remainder of the evening. Alverno would build its lead up to 14 points as the Inferno closed the quarter on a 5-0 run in the final minute.
The second quarter went much better for the Regents as their stifling defense held the Inferno to just 6 points on 2-for-11 shooting. Rockford was quickly able pull back within 5 points as the ladies opened the period on an 11-2 run. Junior Mallorie Getzelman (Byron, Ill.) led the charge scoring Rockford's first 7 points of the quarter. The Inferno did respond with four quick points of their own; however, Getzelman sent Rockford into the half with a bit of momentum as she drained her second three-pointer of the period to pull her team back within six entering the intermission.
The Regents continued to build on that momentum in the opening moments of the third period as Rockford cut further into the Inferno lead. Talayah Gordon Scott (Rockford, Ill.) and Casey Pettit (Rockford, Ill.) each connected on an jumper in the opening minutes to cut the deficit to just 4 points at 34-30. Unfortunately, Alverno promptly went on an 8-2 run to extend its lead back to double-digits. The lead would hover around 10 points for the remainder of the quarter as the Inferno took a 54-44 advantage into the final period.
The fourth quarter was nearly identical to the third as the Regents got off to a quick start before the Inferno eventually took control. Rockford opened with a 6-3 run to make it a 7-point game after baskets from Getzelman, Pettit and Amanda Davis (Mundelein, Ill.). However, the Regents were unable to get any closer as Inferno used a late 7-0 run en route to the 70-56 victory.
