FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Rockford University baseball team continued their spring trip Monday with a game against Carroll University. Rockford was out hit in the game by Carroll but managed to pull off the victory due to timely hitting and strong pitching. The Regents were able to scratch out the win by the final of 5-3.
For Rockford the pitching was strong once again with Thomas Goodyear (Romeoville, Ill.) taking the mound for his first start in a Rockford uniform. Goodyear was fantastic on the mound lasting 6 innings allowing 1 run and only 3 hits. He also struck out 6 batters. The only time he ran into trouble was the bottom of the fourth inning when he walked a batter to load the bases and then walked the next batter allowing a run. However, Goodyear remained composed and limited the Pioneers to only one run in the inning. Tyler Joyce (Rochelle, Ill.) followed up Goodyear before yielding to Joseph Valdez (Tucson, Ariz.) who recorded the final out to earn the first collegiate save of his career.
Offensively, Rockford started slow recording only one hit through the first 3 innings. In the fourth inning the Regents broke the scoreless tie with a two-out Evan Frantini (Coal City, Ill.) RBI triple driving in Cole Logemann (Lena, Ill.). Rockford again struck in the sixth inning when Frantini drove in Austin Smith (Peru, Ill.) on a sacrifice fly. Andrew Hunt (Apple Valley, Calif.) followed that up with a two-run double to plate Logemann and Robert Smith (Bartlett, Ill.). Frantini and Hunt's big hits both came with two outs in the inning. Austin Smith added the final insurance run for the Regents with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. The five runs were all Rockford needed to cap off the 5-3 victory.
The Rockford University baseball team return to action Tuesday, March 8 for two games with the first against Defiance College and Gettysburg College with game one scheduled for 9 a.m. and game two at 12 p.m. Both times are set for EST.
