ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team returned home on Wednesday afternoon following a four-game road trip against the top two teams in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Unfortunately it was another difficult day for the Regents as Rockford dropped both games of the doubleheader by finals of 12-1 and 13-1.
Game one got off to a rocky start for Rockford as Edgewood scored 9 runs in the top of the first inning. The Eagles would add one additional run in the top of the second and two more in the fifth to take a 12-0 advantage. Rockford was finally able to break through in the bottom half of the fifth inning and score its lone run of the game. Junior Stefaney Kenworthy (Veedersburg, Ind.) began the inning with a leadoff walk before working her way to third base with just one out. Shannon LeGath (Sturtevant, Wis.) would later drive in Kenworthy with an RBI groundout to put Rockford on the scoreboard. The Regents only hit of the game came one inning early when Alex Storey (Dexter, Mich.) laced a single through the left side of the infield. Unfortunately Rockford was unable to get any closer and fell by a final score of 12-1.
Game two of the doubleheader followed a similar pattern as Edgewood again jumped out to an early lead. The Eagles scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings including five in the second and four in the third to jump out to a 13-1 lead. Rockford was able to score a run in the bottom of the first with a two-out rally. Alex Storey got the offense going with a two-out walk to give the Regents their first base runner of the game. One batter later, senior Brittany Bura (Chicago, Ill.) crushed an RBI double over the left fielder's head scoring Storey and driving in the Regents' only run of the game. However once again it would not be enough as Rockford dropped game two by a score of 13-1.
The RU softball team returns to the diamond on Saturday, April 16 at home against Dominican University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon at the Smith Athletic Field.
