RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader today on the road against Concordia University Chicago. It was a difficult day for Rockford as the Regents managed just three hits combined in the two games as the Cougars won both by final scores of 7-0 and 6-0.
Rockford had two main scoring opportunities in the first and last inning of the opening game. Freshman Caitlin Eiben (Racine, Wis.) ripped a two-out double into left field in the top of the first inning to give the Regents an early scoring threat. However, the next batter flew out to center field ending the inning and stranding Eiben at second base. In the top of the seventh, Rockford had its best scoring chance of the day as the Regents loaded the bases with no one out. Senior Brittany Bura (Chicago, Ill.) led off the inning with a single followed by a Stefaney Kenworthy (Veedersburg, Ind.) walk. After a passed ball allowed both runners to move up one base, the Regents then loaded the bases thanks to a Cougar error. Unfortunately once again the Cougars were able to wiggle out of the threat by getting the next batter to strike out and then inducing a game-ending double play.
The second game was a difficult game offensively as Rockford managed just one hit and never had a runner in scoring position. It was once again freshman Caitlin Eiben who broke up the Cougar no-hit bid, this time with a single in the top of the fourth inning. Unfortunately just like in game one, Rockford was unable to scratch a run across the plate as the Cougars swept the season series.
The RU softball team returns to action on Tuesday, April 19 at home against Mount Mary University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3:00 PM at the Smith Athletic Field.
