ASHLAND, Wis. - The Rockford University men's soccer team opened the 2016 season on Thursday with an impressive 2-0 win at Northland College. It was an important win for the Regents as it is the first time since 2012 that Rockford won its season opener.
The Regents were in control for nearly the entire match as they outshot the Lumberjacks 15-10 including an impressive 9-3 edge in shots on goal. The Lumberjacks did not even threaten until a minute into the second half when they were finally able to record their first shot on goal. Sophomore goaltender Anthony Beck (Fishers, Ind.) was perfect in his season debut making a trio of saves in nearly 79 minutes of action.
Offensively junior Omar Rivas (Capron, Ill.) stole the show scoring both of Rockford's goals. Rivas broke the scoreless tie in twelfth minute with his first goal of the season. He then added his second goal of the match in the forty-eighth minute off an assist from fellow junior Erik Manriquez (Rockford, Ill.) to seal the 2-0 win.
The RU men's soccer team returns to action on Friday, September 2 in a neutral site match against Finlandia University. The match will be played in Ashland, Wis. with a scheduled start time of 3:00 PM.
