Smothering Defense Sparks Regents' Comeback Win

MADISON, Wis. - The Rockford University women's basketball team won its first game of the new year on Saturday, 63-55 in come-from-behind fashion over the Edgewood College Eagles. After allowing 41 points in the first half, the Regents surrendered a total of just 14 points in the second as Rockford held Edgewood to under 19% shooting after halftime propelling the Regents to victory.

The Regents trailed for nearly the entire first half and were behind by as many as 10 points midway through the second quarter. Rockford did not play badly in the opening 20 minutes; however, the Eagles were simply on fire from the floor. Edgewood shot a blistering 51.6% from the field including draining 4-of-8 three-point attempts. Fortunately, the Regents were able to weather the storm and entered halftime trailing by just eight at 41-33.

Rockford slowly chipped away at Edgewood's lead in the third quarter before ultimately taking control in the fourth. Senior Mallorie Getzelman (Byron, Ill.) led the way scoring six of Rockford's eleven points and matching Edgewood's total as a team for the entire third quarter. Rockford continued to stymie the Eagles in the fourth quarter as they scored just eight points over the final ten minutes. Just over two minutes into the period, Taylor May (East Moline, Ill.) gave Rockford its first lead since the opening moments of the game when she connected on one-of-two at the free throw line. The Regents would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game en route to an important 63-55 win.

Senior Mallorie Getzelman notched her first double-double of the season on Saturday. Getzelman poured in a game-high 23 points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds. She also added 3 steals, 2 assists and 1 block. The senior is now only 100 points shy of becoming just the 11th RU women's basketball player to score 1,000 points in a career.

Nicole Silvers (Byron, Ill.), Taylor May and Lexie Collins (Earlville, Ill.) all cracked double-figures in scoring on Saturday. Silvers scored 14 points, dished out 7 assists, grabbed 5 rebounds and had 3 steals. May tallied her second double-double in the last three games with 11 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 1 block. Collins added a season-high 11 points with 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

The RU women's basketball team returns to the court on Wednesday, January 11 at Alverno College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
