Volleyball Drops Two to UW-Superior

BELOIT, Wis. - The Rockford University volleyball team returned to the court on Saturday for its final two games at the Buc Blast Tournament. The Regents hoped that the momentum they had established late yesterday would carry over to today as Rockford looked to pick up its first win of the season. Unfortunately it was not meant to be as the Regents fell twice, 3-1 and 3-0 to the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

RU began the day strong winning the first set in a hard fought battle 30-28. The Yellowjackets responded however taking the next two sets 25-14 to jump in front 2-1. The fourth set was a nail-biter as Rockford continued to fight but ultimately came up just short dropping the set 25-22 and the match 3-1. Offensively the Regents were once again led by the trio of Maddison Hiland (Bellevue, Iowa), Alex Storey (Dexter, Mich.) and Emily Johannes (Eau Claire, Wis.). Hiland finished with a team-high 12 kills on just 24 attempts, while Storey tallied 10 kills and 5 digs. Johannes finished the match with a season-high 9 kills, 7 digs and 3 aces. Setter Kayla Barthels (Fort Worth, Texas) recorded the Regents' first double-double of the season with a career-high 30 assists and 13 digs. Defensively Rockford had two additional players hit double-figures in digs as Jennifer Quintas (Rockford, Ill.) and August Guest (Lahaina, Hawaii) recorded 17 and 12 respectively.

Rockford's second match of the day against UW-Superior did not go nearly as well as the Regents fell in straight set 3-0. The Yellowjackets seemed to be in control for much of the day winning the sets 25-11, 25-11 and 25-15. Offensively the Regents were led by Hiland and Jessica Diaz (Bolingbrook, Ill.) who tallied 6 and 5 kills respectively. Defensively it was Johannes and Quintas who cracked double-digits with 14 and 11 digs respectively. Kayla Barthels also played well tallying 18 assists and 6 digs.

The RU volleyball team returns to the court on Friday, September 8 against Silver Lake and Northland College beginning at 10 AM.
