Eagles Fly Past Regents in Second Half

MADISON, Wis. - The RU women's basketball team (4-14, 2-11 NACC) never led on Wednesday evening, as the ladies fell 68-50 on the road in their only meeting this season with the Edgewood College Eagles (8-10, 6-7 NACC). Ultimately the difference in the game was Edgewood's ability to convert on its shot attempts. The Eagles shot 41.0% (25-61) from the floor including draining 8 three-pointers, compared to just 26.1% (18-69) shooting with only 2 made three-pointers for the Regents. Rockford did however do an excellent job on the boards. The Regents outrebounded the Eagles 50-46 including a huge 21-12 advantage in offensive rebounds. Unfortunately Rockford was only able to convert those 21 offensive rebounds into 10 second chance points, which was identical to the Eagles' total.

Despite what the final score might indicate, Rockford played well in the first half, especially in the second quarter. After falling behind 13-2 less than 5 minutes into the game, Rockford scored 9 straight points to pull back within two at 13-11. Freshman forward Sammi Russell (Winnebago, Ill.) led the charge scoring 5 points in less than a minute to make it a one-possession game. Unfortunately it was Edgewood who finished the quarter strong with a 9-3 run to take 22-13 lead into the second. The two teams traded baskets for much of the early portion of the second period as the Eagles maintained an 8-point advantage. That's when Rockford used a 6-2 run to once again pull within a single basket in the closing moments of the first half. Sophomore Maddy Pearson (Peru, Ill.) jump-started the run with back-to-back buckets, before Neve Yerk (Belvidere, Ill.) cut the Edgewood lead down to just 2 points with a basket of her own. However Edgewood would score the final points of the half to take a 35-30 lead into the break.

Unfortunately the second half did not go well for Rockford as the Regents were outscored 33-20. Edgewood took advantage of a difficult third quarter as Rockford scored just 8 points and shot 15.8% from the floor, which allowed the Eagles to take a 52-38 edge into the fourth. Edgewood extended its lead to as many as 21 points in the final period before ultimately winning by a final score of 68-50.

Neve Yerk had perhaps her best game of the season off the bench. Yerk recorded her second double-double of the year with 10 points, a career-high 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. Katlyn Fiorucci (Machesney Park, Ill.) also played well off the bench with 7 points, 2 assists, 1 rebound and 1 steal. Nicole Silvers (Byron, Ill.) added 10 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Tajanae Key (Glendale Heights, Ill.) finished with 9 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Katie Hart (Davis Junction, Ill.) had a season-high 10 rebounds, 3 points and 2 steals.

The RU women's basketball team will look to get back on track at home this Saturday, January 27 against Dominican University. Tip-off is set for 4:15 PM in the Seaver Center.
