Hornets Sting Regents

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University football team (1-2) hosted the Kalamazoo College Hornets (3-0) on a hot Saturday afternoon. The Hornets struck first in the second quarter and kept the upper hand for the rest of the game as Kalamazoo went on to stay undefeated with a final score of 23-7.

 

  • In the first quarter Malik Johnson (Chicago, Ill.) came away with a big time pick to keep the Hornets out of scoring position. 
  • Rockford and Kalamazoo went into the second quarter scoreless.
  • The Hornets struck first on a Greg Kearns 26-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead.
  • Kalamazoo scored twice more in the second quarter to take a 17-0 lead heading into the half.
  • The Rockford defense did well to start the second half as Dylan Peterson (Reynolds, Ill.) intercepted a pass on the Hornets first drive.
  • The Hornets scored a field goal late in the third before knocking another one through in the fourth to pull ahead 23-0.
  • Rockford managed to get on the board with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Delayno Mack (Loves Park, Ill.) to Liam Joyce (Harvard, Ill.) with 1:59 remaining in the game.

 

  • Delayno Mack threw for his first touchdown pass of the season.
  • Liam Joyce caught his first career touchdown pass.
  • Malik Johnson and Dylan Peterson each recorded their first interceptions of the season.
  • Jallen Bashford (Fairbury, Ill.) led the Regents on defense with a season-high 12 total tackles.
  • Edel Morales (Deltona, Fla.) finished the game with a career-high 11 total tackles.
  • Octavio Galvez (Loves Park, Ill.) had 9 punts and averaged 40.2 yards a punt including a long of 50.

 

  • The Rockford University football team has a bye-week next week before returning to action for its first road trip of the year when it travels to take on Wisconsin Lutheran on Saturday, September 29. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.
