MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Rockford University women's volleyball team (7-20, 1-11 NACC) picked up a huge 3-1 road victory on Wednesday evening over the Alverno College Inferno (1-26, 0-12 NACC) in its final NACC contest of the season. The Regents outplayed the Inferno basically the entire evening, winning 27-25, 19-25, 25-16 and 25-21. Rockford also held a statistical edges in every major category. Offensively, Rockford had a 42-37 advantage in kills and a 41-35 edge in assists. Defensively, Rockford had 75 digs compared to just 59 for Alverno. The Regents also led in blocks, with 8 assisted and 1 solo, compared to just 6 assisted for Alverno. The win gives Rockford its first NACC victory since the 2015 season.
- The first set was very close, as neither team led by more than five points.
- Rockford took control in the first half of the set, building its lead up to five points at 13-8. Offensively the Regents were led by the duo Della Crain and Jacey Wilson, who tallied three and two kills respectively over that span.
- However, the Inferno answered right back with a 7-1 run of their own to retake the lead at 15-14.
- The set then went back and forth over the next few minutes, before Alverno had a set point at 25-24.
- Rockford's Alicia Puente quickly erased Alverno's set point with a kill and tied the score at 25-25.
- Jacey Wilson then delivered a service ace, followed by a Della Crain kill, as Rockford won the opening set 27-25.
- The second set belonged to the Inferno, as they led from start to finish.
- Alverno built its lead up to as many as eight points before the Regents put together a late run to pull back within one.
- Unfortunately, Alverno rattled off five straight points to win the set 25-19 and knot the match at 1-1.
- Rockford rebounded nicely with a very well played third set. The Regents never trailed in the set, as they got off to a fast start and closed strong.
- The Regents opened on a 9-5 run to take an early four-point lead. Rockford had three players record kills during that span, led by three from Della Crain.
- Rockford was able to maintain a slim lead for much of the set, until the Regents began to pull away late.
- The Regents closed on a 9-2 run to win the third set 25-16 and take a 2-1 lead.
- The fourth and final set came down to the wire, as the two schools took turns sharing the lead.
- Alverno scored the first three points, before Rockford responded with a 6-0 run to take a 6-3 lead. Four different Regents tallied kills during the run, led by two from Della Crain.
- Rockford would extend its lead to as many as five points at 16-11, before the Inferno made one final push.
- Alverno used a 10-4 run late in the set to grab a 21-20 lead, their first since leading 3-2 in the opening moments.
- Fortunately, Rockford dug deep and closed on a 5-0 run, to take the fourth set 25-21 and match 3-1.
- Paige Carpenter tallied a pair of kills over that span, while Jessica Witkowski and Mackenzie Blizniak combined for a block to end the match.
- Della Crain finished with a match-high 17 kills, 2 digs and 3 block assists. This marked the twelfth time this season that Crain has recorded double-digit kills in a match.
- Brooke Mirshak led the Rockford defense with a match-high 28 digs and 2 assists.
- Jessica Witkowski finished with a team-high 24 assists, 9 digs, 2 aces and 1 block assist.
- Nicole Eggers had a nice all-around match with 5 digs, 4 kills, 3 block assists, 1 ace and 1 solo block.
- Paige Carpenter tallied 13 digs, 6 kills, 4 assists and 3 aces.
- Casey Sheetz had 10 digs, 8 assists, 2 aces and 1 kill.
The RU women's volleyball team concludes its season with a pair matches on Friday, November 1 at Benedictine University. The Regents are set to face Wheaton at 6 PM, followed by a nonconference tilt against Benedictine at 8 PM.
