Slow Start Hinders Regents' Comeback Attempt

MADISON, Wis. - The Rockford University men's basketball team (4-5, 3-2 NACC) fell 81-67 on the road Saturday afternoon to the Edgewood College Eagles (2-5, 2-2 NACC). The Regents dug themselves into an early 23-4 hole that they were never quite able to get out of. Each time it seemed as though the Regents were building some momentum to possibly tie the game or take the lead, the Eagles answered and pushed their lead back to double-digits. Statistically, Edgewood held advantages in every key area. The Eagles outshot the Regents by nearly ten percentage points (49.2%-39.4%), made seven more free throws and outrebounded Rockford, 42-33.

  • The Eagles came flying out of the gates, making 10 of their first 14 shot attempts, to grab an early 23-4 lead.
  • Rockford would answer with an 11-0 run of its own, to pull back within eight points at the 8:34 mark. Three different Regents found the bottom of the net during the run, led by seven points from Nathaniel Shead.
  • The Regents were able to make it a six-point game on multiple occassions over the final eight minutes of the half, with the last time coming at the 2:42 mark, off a Ashton Singleton triple.
  • Unfortunately, it was the Eagles who closed the half on a 10-3 run to take a 45-32 advantage into the break.
  • The second half got off to an excellent start for the Regents. Rockford came roaring out the gates, with a 12-2 run, to make it a three-point game. Four different Regents scored over the first four minutes of the second half, led by six points from P.J. Gray III.
  • The Eagle lead would then hover around six points over the next eight minutes of the second half.
  • Unfortunately, it was once again the Eagles who closed the half strong. Edgewood went on a 17-9 run over the final 7:40 en route to an 81-67 win.

  • Nathaniel Shead led Rockford with a team-high 17 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks and 1 assist off the bench.
  • Ashton Singleton added 13 points, including going a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
  • Kivontay Shaw finished with 11 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 1 block.

The RU men's basketball team returns to the court on Wednesday, December 18 at North Park University. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
