Women's Volleyball Comes Up Short at Knox

GALESBURG, Ill. - The Rockford University women's volleyball team (2-7) fell 3-1 on the road Wednesday evening to the Knox College Prairie Fire (4-7). Rockford continued to show signs of improvement, as the Regents played much better against the Prairie Fire the second time around this season. This time the Regents were able to win the opening set and were also very competitive in the other three. Unfortunately, it was the Prairie Fire who came out on top, 20-25, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-18.

  • The Regents played extremely well in the opening set of the match, as Rockford had 14 kills compared to just four attack errors on 41 total attempts.
  • Although the first set was close the majority of the way, the Regents never trailed by more than a point and slowly began to pull away at the midway point.
  • With score tied at 13-13, Rockford used a 4-1 run to take the largest lead for either team thus far at 17-14. Alicia Puente and Nicole Eggers each recorded a kill during that span.
  • Rockford never trailed for the remainder of the set, closing on a 4-1 run to take a 1-0 lead. Casey Sheetz, Paige Carpenter and Alicia Puente all hammered home kills to help Rockford secure the 25-20 win in the first set.
  • The second set went back-and-forth in the opening moments with neither team able to gain much separation.
  • With the score tied at 9-9, Knox used a 9-3 run to pull out in front 18-12.
  • The Regents would not go down without a fight though, as Rockford promptly went on a 9-4 run of its own to claw back within a single point. Five different Regents tallied a kill during the run, as Rockford now trailed 22-21.
  • Unfortunately, Knox scored the final three points of the set for the 25-22 win and knotted the match at 1-1.
  • The beginning moments of the third set were near identical to the second, as the two schools traded points with Rockford holding an early 10-9 advantage.
  • Things began to swing in Knox's favor, as the Prairie Fire scored nine of the next eleven points to take an 18-12 lead.
  • Rockford was never able to get any closer than four points the remainder of the way, as Knox won the third set 25-19, to take a 2-1 advantage.
  • The fourth set followed a similar pattern as the previous two with Knox using a 7-1 run midway through, to take a 15-11 lead.
  • The Regents were able to get back within two points on two different occasions, but it was the Prairie Fire who closed the match on an 8-3 run, to take the third set 25-18 and the match 3-1.

The RU women's volleyball team returns home for a pair of matches on Friday, September 13. The Regents open with Moody Bible at 4 PM followed by North Central University at 8 PM.
