ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University women's basketball team (2-13, 0-10 NACC) dropped a tough game 74-52 Thursday night to the Dominican University Stars (10-4, 6-3 NACC). Despite what the final score might indicate, the Regents played well for much of the evening. Rockford shot an impressive 47.5% from the floor, including 36.4% from three-point range, while Dominican shot just 39.4% from the field and 34.8% from long distance. Unfortunately, the Stars amassed an incredible 24 offensive rebounds, which helped lead to Dominican taking 31 more shot attempts and gave the Stars a 17-2 edge in second chance points. The added shot attempts, second chance points and a 24-12 advantage in the second quarter, all contributed to Dominican's second win over the Regents this season.
- The first quarter was extremely exciting, as the entire period was played within an eight-point spread. Rockford scored two of the first three baskets to take an early three-point lead. Linzy Keller scored the first points of the game, followed by an Emily Cox triple, to give the Regents a quick 5-2 advantage.
- With Rockford still holding a two-point advantage late in the period, the Stars used a 7-0 run to take a 14-7 lead with 3:02 remaining.
- Fortunately, Rockford closed the period with four straight points. Emily Cox and Sammi Russell hit back-to-back layups in the closing seconds, to cut the Dominican lead down to one, at 14-13.
- The Regents and Stars traded buckets over the early portion of the second, as Dominican clung to a 22-19 advantage with 6:25 remaining. However, the Stars promptly went on an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to extend their lead to double-digits.
- The game went back-and-forth for the remainder of the half, with Dominican holding a 38-25 edge heading into the break.
- Rockford was able to pull back within single-digits early in the third quarter. Emily Cox hit back-to-back triples and trim the Star lead down to nine at the 8:23 mark.
- Unfortunately, the Stars used a 10-0 run over the next three minutes to push their lead to 19 points at 50-31.
- Dominican then extended its advantage to as many as 24 points en route to a 74-52 victory.
- Emily Cox led all scorers with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including connecting on 4-of-6 three-point attempts.
- Linzy Keller finished with 18 points, 4 rebounds and 1 assist.
The RU women's basketball team returns to the court on Saturday, January 18 at Alverno College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM.
