ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University men's basketball team (11-12, 9-9 NACC) fell 99-92 Saturday afternoon against the Edgewood Eagles (8-15, 7-11 NACC). The Regents came out strong playing a tough game of basketball but struggled to maintain the lead. Rockford shot 50% from the field keeping pace with Edgewood who shot 51.7% from the field. The Regents also outrebounded the Eagles 44-32. Unfortunately, the Eagles were able to take advantage of turnovers and fouls. There were six Regents with double-digit points including all five starters. Kivontay Shaw and Jamar Rivera each contributed with double-doubles, Shaw scoring 20 points with 10 rebounds and Rivera scoring 11 points with 12 rebounds. Nathaniel Shead and Kivontay Shaw both came up big for the Regents, leading the scoring with 20 points each.
- The first half started out slow with the Regents putting up the first two points at the 17:38 mark left in the first half.
- After Edgewood tieing it at 2-2, Brandon Emerick pulled up for a 3-point jumper for the Regents to jump back out in front 5-2.
- Kivontay Shaw increased Rockford's lead 14-7 by knocking down a 3-point basket with 14:37 left in the first half.
- Both teams traded baskets, but Edgewood went on a 4-0 scoring run to tie the Regents at 18-18 with 11:36 left in the first half.
- Rockford took back the lead 22-19. However, Edgewood tied it two more times before finally taking the lead 25-24.
- The Eagles created some space by going on an 8-1 scoring run to lead 42-26 with 4:43 left in the first half.
- The Regents went on a 5-1 scoring run to close the gap. Rockford trailed the Eagles 43-35 with 1:51 left in the half.
- Despite a strong Regent effort in the final minutes of the first half, Edgewood held the lead at 47-41 going into the second half.
- Rockford started off the second half hot with back-to-back layups from Vincent Eugene and P.J. Gray III to trail the Eagles a close 47-45.
- Edgewood came back with a 7-3 scoring run to propel themselves 64-51 over the Regents with 12:52 left to play.
- Nathaniel Shead drained a 3-pointer to stop the damage and kickstart a 4-1 scoring run to trail 67-60.
- With both teams trading baskets, Nathaniel Shead came up big for the Regents hitting another 3-point basket for Rockford to be down 75-69 with 5:25 left remaining in the game.
- Nathaniel Shead gave the Regents life with an and-1 and sinking the free throw. He also came through with another 3-pointer down a stretch of scoring to keep the Regents in it down 85-78 with 2:36 left to play.
- A pair of and-1's from Jamar Rivera and Kivontay Shaw kept the pressure on the Eagles as the Regents were down 90-84 with 1:40 left in the game.
- Brandon Emerick made it a game, scoring a huge 3-pointer with 34 seconds left for Rockford to trail 93-89.
- Kivontay Shaw hit a 3-point basket with 12 seconds left in the game, but it was too late as Edgewood went on to win 99-92.
- Kivontay Shaw tied for a team lead with 20 points. He also had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Shaw tallied 3 assists and 3 blocks to go along with his double-double.
- Nathaniel Shead tied with Shaw for a team lead of 20 points. Shead also finished with 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block.
- Vincent Eugene recorded 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal.
The RU men's basketball team returns to the court on Tuesday, February 18 against Lakeland University. Tip-off is set for 7 PM in the Seaver Center.
