Late Rally Sends Seniors Off with a Win

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Rockford University baseball team (9-3) scored seven runs during its final two innings at the plate and sent its seniors off with a 7-3 victory over Carroll University (4-7) in the last game of the season. Offensively, Rockford tallied 11 hits on Saturday, marking the seventh time in twelve games that the Regents have recorded at least 11 hits in a game. Individually, the Regents had four players, Hunter Fiorito, Corey Saracco, Dylan Johnson and Logan Streit, record multi-hit performances on Saturday. In total, seven different Regents had a hit in the game. On the mound, Rockford got outstanding performances from all three pitchers. Starter Joseph Kmiec gave Rockford six solid innings, and Kent Evans Jr. and Zack Jones were both impressive in relief.

  • Starting pitcher Joseph Kmiec got off to a strong start on the hill for the Regents. Kmiec held the Pioneers scoreless through three innings and retired seven straight batters, including the sitting down the side in order in both the second and third innings.
  • However, it was the Pioneers who struck first for two runs in the top of the fourth. Carroll tallied just two hits in the frame, but took advantage of a Rockford error, which helped them score a pair of unearned runs and take a 2-0 lead.
  • With the RU offense still being held in check, the Regents turned to their pitching staff and defense to keep it just a two-run game. Joseph Kmiec continued his solid work on the mound, holding the Pioneer attack scoreless during his final two innings of work.
  • Rockford then went to its bullpen and Kent Evans Jr. to begin the top of the seventh. Evans Jr. struck out two of the four batters he faced, to keep it a 2-0 game.
  • The Regent attack finally broke through with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Corey Saracco got things rolling with a leadoff triple to left center field. Two batters later, Logan Streit singled to right, scoring Saracco, and cutting the Pioneer lead in half. Jacob Rillamas followed with a single of his own, to put runners on first and second with still only one out. Dylan Johnson then laced an RBI single into center, to score Saracco, and tie the game at 2-2. Following a pop-out and a pitching change, Hunter Fiorito crushed a two-run double down the left field line, to give the Regents their first lead of the day.
  • Kent Evans Jr. then proceeded to toss a scoreless top of the eighth, as Rockford took its 4-2 lead into the bottom of the frame.
  • Rockford would then tack on three insurance runs to essentially put the game away. Corey Saracco was once again the catalyst, starting things off with a one-out walk. Following a pitching change, Christian Garcia belted an RBI double to left center, to extend the Regents lead to 5-2. After a Logan Streit single and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with two outs, Dylan Johnson ripped a two-run single into the outfield and gave Rockford a 7-2 advantage heading into the ninth.
  • Zack Jones took over on the mound for the Regents in the final inning of the season. Jones did not allow a hit in frame and struck out the final batter of the year, as Rockford concluded its season with a 7-3 victory.

  • Senior Hunter Fiorito finished the game 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and 2 runs batted in.
  • Senior Corey Saracco went 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 runs scored.
  • Senior Dylan Johnson was also 2-for-4 with a run scored and 3 runs driven in.
  • Senior Jacob Rillamas went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Senior Jacob Toepfer finished 1-for-3 at the plate.
  • Seniors Troy Tucci, Michael Gunter and Ryan Gillfillan all hit and played well in the game.
  • Logan Streit finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
  • Christian Garcia was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Senior Joseph Kmiec threw 6 strong innings in his final start. Kmiec scattered 6 hits, allowed 0 earned runs and struck out one.
  • Kent Evans Jr. picked up the win and improved to 1-0 this year. Evans Jr. tossed 2 shutout innings and struck out three.
  • Senior Zack Jones pitched the final inning of the season for the Regents. Jones did not allow a hit and struck out the final batter of the year.
