Men's Volleyball Wins First Match and First NACC Match in School History

DE PERE, Wis. - The Rockford University men's volleyball team (1-12, 1-0 NACC) made history Friday night by defeating NACC opponent St. Norbert College (3-14, 0-2 NACC) 3-0 for Rockford's first men's volleyball win and conference win in school history. The Regents were dominant the whole match, winning 25-18, 25-23 and 26-24. Rockford got the job done despite having eight available players for today's match. Jose Padron Garcia and Randall Simental led the offensive charge for the Regents with Padron Garcia smashing down a season-high 11 kills for three sets and Simental hammering down 9 kills. The Regents were outstanding while setting numerous program highs with 33 kills, 27 assists, 9 service aces and 38 digs in three sets.

 

  • Rockford got off to a fast and commanding start with an 11-5 scoring run to start the first set. Jeremy Weaver had three big kills during the rally, while Randall Simental added two kills of his own and Jorge Pando helped with an ace.
  • Jeremy Weaver and Jose Padron Garcia teamed up for a couple kills to make it 13-6.
  • St. Norbert came back with a 5-1 run to come within three points of the Regents, making it 14-11.
  • A trio of kills rained down from Randall Simental, Marcus Pennington and Jose Padron Garcia, followed by two service aces from Matthew Seger and Randall Simental to finish it off. The Regents put together an impressive 10-6 scoring run to put the Green Knights away 25-18 in the first set.
  • St. Norbert started off the second set scoring the first point, but Rockford picked up where it left off by dominating for the next five consecutive points to lead 5-1. Jose Padron Garcia continued to play well, earning a kill for the Regents. Jorge Pando put up back-to-back service aces to contribute to the 5-1 lead.
  • However, St. Norbert answered with a 5-0 scoring run to take the lead 6-5.
  • Rockford traded points back and forth with St. Norbert finding themselves down 12-9.
  • The Regents fought back and gained some traction by going on a 9-4 scoring run to lead 18-16. The uprising was led by Jose Padron Garcia with three monstrous kills, aided by Randall Simental and Marcus Pennington with service aces respectively.
  • St. Norbert scored the next two points to tie the Regents 18-18.
  • Randall Simental and Jose Padron Garcia led the way with five kills and Rockford's intense momentum swing propelled the Regents into a 7-4 scoring run shutting down the Green Knights 25-23 for the second set.
  • The intensity was high as Rockford went into set three up 2-0.
  • St. Norbert stole the first two points in the third set.
  • Rockford played evenly with St. Norbert, tieing the set 3-3 off of two massive kills from Randall Simental and Marcus Pennington.
  • After St. Norbert led 5-4, the Regents created some space with a 4-1 scoring run with kills from Marcus Pennington and Jose Padron Garcia to take the lead 8-6.
  • St. Norbert regained the lead 12-10 after a 6-2 scoring run.
  • An earth-shaking kill from Marcus Pennington started a 6-3 scoring run to take the lead 16-15.
  • St. Norbert scored three consecutive points to take an 18-16 lead over the Regents.
  • Rockford made a promising push towards the finish with a 6-1 scoring run to lead 22-19. The Regents were fired up as enormous kills were being handed out left and right from Jose Padron Garcia, Jeremy Weaver, Randall Simental and Marcus Pennington.
  • St. Norbert made things interesting with a 5-1 scoring run at the end to lead 24-23.
  • But the Regents stayed calm and collected, scoring the next three points to come out on top 26-24. Rockford took home the 3-0 win, the first win in program history and first NACC win in program history.

 

  • Jose Padron Garcia tied his season-high kills with 11 and season-high blocks with 2. He also finished with 8 digs.
  • Randall Simental recorded a season-high 3 aces with 9 kills and a team-leading 9 digs.
  • Marcus Pennington tallied a season-high 6 kills and tied his season-high with 3 blocks. He also had a service ace.
  • Jeremy Weaver tied his season-high kills with 5 kills on the night. He also contributed with a block to help the Regents.
  • Jorge Pando achieved a season-high with 3 service aces, while also having 7 digs and a kill.

The Rockford University men's volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, March 7 against Maranatha Baptist University. The match is set for 5 PM in the Seaver Center.
