ROCKFORD, Ill. - Rockford University's
Joey Owens added yet another award to his collection on Wednesday morning when it was announced that he had been named Second Team All-Region by D3football.com. This is the second postseason award of the year for Owens, as he was already named First Team All-NACC by the conference's nine head coaches. Owens becomes just the fifth RU football player in program history to be named to a D3football.com all-region team, only the second to be named D3football.com Second Team All-Region (Jeff Cihlar, OL) and the first ever RU offensive skill position player to earn D3football.com all-region status. Additionally, Owens was the only NACC wide receiver to garner all-region recognition from D3football.com this season.
Joey Owens had by far the best season of any wide receiver in school history. He broke or tied ten different school records (receptions - game/season/career, touchdown receptions - game/season/career, receiving yards - season/career, points scored - season and total touchdowns - season) as well as the NACC single-season receiving yards record. At the time of being named all-region, Owens led the NACC in every major receiving category and was ranked in the top 15 in the country in five categories. He was second in NCAA Division III in receiving touchdowns (17), third in receiving yards per game (126.9) and receptions per game (8.6), fourth in receiving yards (1,269) and fourteenth in scoring (10.4).
Owens did not shy away from tough competition throughout the year, as he turned in some of his best performances against some of the top teams on Rockford's schedule. He caught a school record 14 passes for 242 yards and 2 touchdowns against NACC Champion and NCAA Tournament participant Aurora University. Owens also had 8 catches for 147 yards and 3 touchdowns against UMAC Champion and NCAA Tournament participant Greenville University. Finally, Owens tallied 9 catches for 197 yards and 2 touchdowns versus NACC runner-up Benedictine University.
This marks the 17th year D3football.com has named an All-Region team. The All-America teams will be announced on the evening of Friday, December 17 at the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. For a complete listing of all the D3football.com All-Region teams, please visit their website via the link below.
