ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University men's basketball team (3-2, 2-1 NACC) routed the Concordia University Chicago Cougars (0-7, 0-3 NACC) to a tune of 87-71. The Regents dominated on both sides of the court not giving the Cougars any room to make a come-back. Rockford's 19 offensive rebounds and 15 steals helped control the game for the Regents. Also, the Regents took advantage of the Cougars 27 turnovers scoring 31 points from turnovers alone. Rockford put the pressure on right away and did not give up the lead after it overtook Concordia's first basket 2-0 lead to start the game. However, the driving force in tonight's game had to be Kevin Diemer who has been stellar for the Regents all season. Diemer scored a mind boggling career high 41 points in tonight's win over the Cougars. Concordia could not stop Diemer in the paint as he tallied a double-double with 41 points and 16 rebounds. Diemer was just shy of the Rockford University record of most points scored in a game by eight points, the record being 49 points in a game established in 1968.
- The Cougars were awarded the first basket of the game to make it 2-0 but, that was the last lead they would see for the rest of the game.
- The Regents answered with an insane 19-0 scoring run to back down the Cougars. Kevin Diemer led the scoring run with 11 points with help from Nick Phillips who sank a couple three-pointers and Vincent Eugene who added a layup.
- Concordia Chicago tried to inch its way back with a 12-4 scoring run to trail 23-14 with 9:44 left to play in the first half.
- Brandon Emerick put a stop to the Cougars run with a made three-point bucket which led to a Regents 10-3 scoring run. Emerick hit another three-pointer and a couple free-throws along with Nick Phillips layup to lead 33-17 over the Cougars with 8:01 left in the first half.
- Rockford closed out the first half with a 17-9 scoring run over the Cougars to lead by 22 points, 50-28 going into the second half.
- The Cougars tried closing the gap between them and the Regents, coming out in the second half with a 14-6 scoring run to trail 57-42 with 14:21 left to play in the game. Kevin Diemer and Nick Phillips both knocked down big triples to make the Cougars work harder to get back in the game.
- After both teams traded a few baskets, the Regents went on a 15-6 scoring run with Kevin Diemer once again leading with six points during the run. De'Marius Bonds added four points, while Ashton Singleton added three points and Nick Phillips added a couple points to lead 77-54 with 5:38 left to play in the game.
- With 3:24 left to play, Kevin Diemer scored his 41st point putting the Regents ahead 81-59.
- The Regents were to much for the Cougars to handle, going on to win by an overwhelming score of 87-71.
- Kevin Diemer scored a career high 41 points accounting for about half of the Regents points and just shy of the all-time school record for most points in a game. Diemer also recorded a double-double with 41 points and 16 rebounds. Adding to his already impressive night, he helped with 4 assists and a steal.
- Nick Phillips tallied 18 points with 3 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.
- Brandon Emerick had 8 points, 7 steals, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
The RU men's basketball team continues its home stand and second game against Concordia University Chicago on Saturday, February 13. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
