ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University men's basketball team (2-2, 1-0 NACC) put on a spectacular display defeating the Aurora University Spartans (1-1, 1-1 NACC) 96-79. The Regents over powered the Spartans at the 13:57 mark in the first half and never looked back. Rockford did not let off the gas, holding the lead for 93.7% of the game. The Regents were led by Kevin Diemer and De'Marius Bonds who each tallied 21 points. Vincent Eugene impressed with a half court three-pointer at the buzzer going into the half, giving the Regents an extra boost of confidence. Rockford proved to be a fierce contender in the NACC with its conference opener win over Aurora.
- Rockford struck first with an Ashton Singleton three-point basket.
- After trading buckets with the Spartans, the Regents put the pressure on with a layup from Kevin Diemer to put Rockford up 10-5.
- Aurora came back and tied it up at 13-13 with a couple made free-throws.
- However, Rockford went on a 13-2 point run at the 13:57 mark in the first creating some space leading 28-18. De'Marius Bonds kicked it off splashing a three-pointer and following it up with a layup. Micah Swanson added a bucket and Vincent Eugene helped with three-points coming from a free-throw and a layup. Nick Phillips capped it off with a dagger three-pointer.
- The Spartans came within six points at the 9:08 mark in the first half making it 30-24 Regents, but could not sustain the comeback.
- The Regents steadily hovered around being up by ten points through the rest of the first half. Brandon Emerick, Nick Phillips and Vincent Eugene all added fuel to the fire with big three-pointers. Although, Vincent Eugene's monstrous half court three-pointer at the buzzer going into the half diminished hope for the Spartans.
- Rockford started the second half up by 13 points, 50-37.
- The Regents kept the pressure on and even when the Spartans seemed to find their footing the Regents would come right back and score. Aurora was able to bring themselves within eight points at the 18:05 mark in the second half with a score of 54-46.
- Rockford took advantage of a 12-3 scoring run making it 66-49 and chipped away to create a sizable lead. Kevin Diemer, Brandon Emerick, Ashton Singleton and Micah Swanson all contributed during this scoring run for the Regents.
- De'marius Bonds had himself a game, knocking down a three-pointer at the 9:23 mark in the second half to bring his point total to 17 and give the Regents breathing room up by 18 points, 78-60.
- The Regents really broke it open with 5:29 left to play in the second half when Micah Swanson dropped in a layup to give Rockford its largest lead of the game, leading the Spartans by 23 points, 88-65.
- Rockford cruised to the finish, defeating Aurora 96-79 and achieving its first conference win of the season.
- De'Marius Bonds recorded a season high 21 points. He also tallied 7 rebounds and an assist.
- Kevin Diemer continued his dominance with 21 points, 7 rebounds and a steal.
- Ashton Singleton scored 15 points for the second consecutive game while earning 2 rebounds, an assist and a steal.
- Micah Swanson tallied 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
- Vincent Eugene continued to be a force on the boards, ripping 11 rebounds. He also had 8 points, 8 assists, a block and a steal.
The RU men's basketball team continues its home stand and second game against Aurora University on Saturday, February 6. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM.
