Football Drops Season Opener at Wisconsin Lutheran

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Rockford University football team (0-1) fell 28-14 on the road Saturday to the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors (1-0) to begin the season. Rockford was held scoreless through three quarters but was able to move the ball throughout the game. The Regents finished with 409 yards of total offense and moved the ball into Wisconsin Lutheran territory seven times. Unfortunately, Rockford was only able to find the end zone twice late in the fourth quarter, while turning the ball over on downs four times and throwing an interception on the other possession that ended in WLC territory. The Warriors on the other hand, were able to create explosive plays that ultimately turned out to be the difference in the game. Wisconsin Lutheran scored two of its four touchdowns on pass plays that covered over 55 yards.

  • Following a quick three and out on Rockford's first possession, Wisconsin Lutheran put together the first long drive of the game. The Warriors moved the ball 43 yards on 10 plays to get into Rockford territory.
  • However, the Regents' defense came up with the first big play of the game, when it stopped the Warriors on fourth and nine at the RU 31 yard line.
  • The RU offense promptly responded with a 14-play drive that chewed up nearly eight minutes off the clock.
  • Rockford would get as deep into WLC territory as the 19 yard line, but ultimately faced a fourth and 19 from the Warrior 29 yard line. Rockford could not convert on fourth down and turned the ball back over on downs to Wisconsin Lutheran.
  • The Warriors then put together their best drive of the day. Wisconsin Lutheran went 71 yards on 12 plays, capped off by a 4-yard touchdown pass from Nick Yockey to Justin Parbs, to take a 7-0 lead with 13:11 left in the first half.
  • Rockford again moved the ball very well on its next possession and had yet another scoring opportunity. One of the most critical plays came early on in the drive with the Regents facing a third and fifteen from their own 40 yard line. Quarterback Jaelen Ray found LaVar Johnson Jr. for 44 yards to put the ball into the red zone for the second time in as many drives.
  • Following a couple of running plays and a WLC penalty, the Regents found themselves with a first and goal and four yard line. Unfortunately, Rockford went backwards over the next few plays before being stopped at the one yard line on fourth and goal, thus turning the ball back over to the Warriors.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran was unable to gain any yards and was forced to punt, setting up the Regents with excellent field position at the WLC 39 yard line.
  • Unfortunately, Rockford was not able to do anything with it and turned the ball over on downs for the third time in the first half.
  • The Warriors would take advantage, going 71 yards on 10 plays to score their second touchdown of the half. Nick Yockey ran it in from two yards out with just three seconds left before halftime. The conversion attempt was no good and Wisconsin Lutheran entered the half leading 13-0.
  • Neither team was able to get much of anything going for the majority of the third quarter.
  • However, Wisconsin Lutheran made it a 21-0 game after Nick Yockey found Jordan Jewell for a 58-yard touchdown strike with 48 seconds left in the third.
  • With Rockford still trailing 21-0, the Regents finally found the end zone on their second possession of the fourth quarter.
  • The Regents ran the ball on seven of the eight plays, capped off by a one-yard touchdown run from LaVar Johnson Jr. Gerardo Zamudio's point after was good and Rockford now trailed 21-7 with 6:07 left in the game.
  • It seemed as though Rockford was going to get the ball back with good field position, as Wisconsin Lutheran faced a third and ten from its own 33 yard line. However, Nick Yockey found Cory Diedrick for his third passing touchdown of the game, this one covering 67 yards to make it a 28-7 game.
  • Rockford was not done quite yet though, as the Regents scored their second touchdown of the game on the very next drive. Jaelen Ray went 3-for-4 for 38 yards and Emani Johnson carried the ball twice for 12 yards, including a one-yard touchdown plunge. Zamudio again converted the point after to make it 28-14.
  • Unfortunately, Rockford was unable to get any closer and fell by a final score of 28-14.

  • LaVar Johnson Jr. carried the ball 19 times for 113 yards and 1 touchdown. He also caught 3 passes for 51 yards.
  • Emani Johnson had 8 rushes for 44 yards and 1 touchdown. He also had 2 receptions for 15 yards.
  • Jaelen Ray went 22-of-37 for 210 yards. He also picked up 24 yards rushing off 13 carries.
  • Titus Cannon was Rockford's leading receiver with 5 catches for 65 yards.
  • Jallen Bashford led the defense with 9 tackles.

The Regents will open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, March 27 against Lakeland University. Kickoff is set for 1 PM at Sam Greeley Field.
