Regents Plagued by Errors

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University baseball team (3-4) fell in both games Sunday afternoon to the Marian University Sabres (3-5). Too many errors cost the Regents both games as the Sabres went on to win game one 17-10 and game two 20-1. Rockford's bats stayed hot in game one scoring 10 runs with three extra-base hits. However, it came down to defense and pitching for the Regents. Too many mistakes were made in the field to keep the games close as Marian took advantage of the fielding errors.

Game 1: Marian 17 Rockford 10

  • Christian Garcia got the Regents off to a great start in the bottom of the first inning with a big two-run homer.
  • Marian matched Garcia with a solo shot to left-center field.
  • With bases loaded in the bottom of the second inning, Rockford's Phil Hyland doubled to right field driving in Zach Hunter and Peyton McCray. The next batter up, Jared Herzog hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Jordin Lee and take an early 5-1 lead.
  • In the top of the third inning, Marian homered again but this time it was a two-run shot making it 5-3.
  • Rockford continued to tack on to its lead with Jordin Lee hitting a single into center field to score Caleb Randolph and Peyton McCray with two outs. Phil Hyland kept the rally going with a single up the middle to score Zach Hunter and put the Regents ahead 8-3.
  • However, the Sabres scored four runs in the top of the fifth to trail by a run, 8-7.
  • The Regents were able to squeeze out another run in the bottom of the sixth when Christian Garcia flew out to left field for the sacrifice fly to score Phil Hyland.
  • The Sabres overtook the Regents in the seventh inning to take a commanding 15-9 lead. Rockford's defense fell apart and Marian took advantage of the three errors committed in the top of the seventh scoring six runs.
  • With Marian leading 15-9, Rockford tried to string together a good inning. Iszak Mestas singled through the left side scoring Jared Herzog in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Unfortunately, Marian hit another two-run homer in the top of the ninth and held the Regents, taking game one 17-10.

Game 2: Marian 20 Rockford 1 (7 innings)

  • Rockford had a difficult first inning allowing three runs by the Sabres and prolonging the inning with an error.
  • Iszak Mestas doubled down the right-field line to score Jared Herzog for Rockford's one lone run of the game.
  • Marian put the game further out of reach by scoring five runs in the second inning to lead 8-1.
  • Rockford went down quietly in the bottom of the second and Marian scored 10 runs in the third inning to lead by a commanding score of 18-1.
  • Rockford was not able to come back from such a large deficit, dropping game two 20-1.
