Regents Continue Hot Streak with Sweep Against Mount Mary

LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team (10-2) swept the Mount Mary University Blue Angels (1-12) Monday night. Rockford showed toughness in the come-from-behind victory in the first game. The Regents were down 12-9 going into the bottom of the seventh inning and were able to rally for four runs in the walk-off 13-12 win. The Regents made quick work of the Blue Angels in the second game, winning 11-1 in five innings.

Game 1: Rockford 13 Mount Mary 12

  • Mount Mary stunned the Regents scoring three runs in the first inning from a ground out and back-to-back doubles.
  • Rockford went down quietly in the bottom of the first but got on the board in the second inning when Olivia Swanson singled to center field to score Michaela Spanbauer.
  • With the Blue Angels leading 3-1, Mount Mary struck again in the top of the third with a ground out to score a run and take a 4-1 lead.
  • However, the Regents kept the pressure on with a double down the left-field line by Michaela Spanbauer to score Gretchen Schrubbe and Jocelyn Callahan.
  • Mount Mary increased its lead in the fourth inning to 7-3, scoring three runs from a triple and a two-run homer.
  • The Regents would not quit coming right back at the Blue Angels in the bottom of the fourth scoring McCathran Andrew from Gretchen Schrubbe's double to center field.
  • The Blue Angels were able to score three runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 10-4 lead.
  • Rockford continued to chip away, scoring Michaela Spanbauer on a first and third play and scored another run when Jessica Kearns hit a solo shot over the left-field fence to trail Mount Mary 10-6.
  • Mount Mary kept adding on with two more runs in the top of the sixth to lead 12-6.
  • The Regents came roaring back with a three-run sixth inning from a Mikayla Seay double to right-center to score Emily Cox and a Breanna Collins single to right-center to score Mikayla Seay.
  • Rockford was able to hold Mount Mary to no runs in the top of the seventh, but still trailed 12-9. 
  • The Regents came up to bat for its last chances in the bottom of the seventh. Mikayla Seay singled through the left side to score Gretchen Schrubbe. Michaela Spanbauer also singled through the left side to score Elaine Zimmerman. Jessica Kearns hit a single to score Mikayla Seay and tie the game 12-12. Olivia Swanson hit a walk-off single to center field scoring Michaela Spanbauer and taking the 13-12 victory.
  • Mikayla Seay got the win in the circle for the Regents, improving to 4-0 on the season.

Game 2: Rockford 11 Mount Mary 1

Game 1:

  • Michaela Spanbauer went 3-4 with a double, 3 RBI's and 3 runs scored.
  • Gretchen Schrubbe went 2-3 with a homer, a double, 2 RBI's, 3 runs scored and a stolen base.
  • Jessica Kearns went 2-4 with the first homer of her career in a Regents uniform. Kearns also had 2 RBI's and a run scored.
  • Mikayla Seay picked up her fourth win of the season pitching 3.1 innings.

Game 2:

  • Paige Korsan went 2-3 with two doubles, 3 RBI's and a run scored.
  • Gretchen Schrubbe went 2-4 with a triple, 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored. 
  • Mikayla Seay went 2-3 with two doubles, 2 runs scored and an RBI.
  • Rylee Klema picked up the win to improve to 4-1 on the season. Klema threw 5 innings, striking out 6 on 2 hits and 1 earned run.

The RU softball team returns to the diamond on Wednesday, March 31 at MSOE. First pitch is set for 3 PM.
